MORE is LOVE: Tells us a little about yourselves...

Ostwald Helgason: We are Susanne Ostwald from Germany and Ingvar Helgason from Iceland. Our brand Ostwal Helgason was founded in 2008.

MORE is LOVE: What is your background in the industry?

Susanne: I was born in 1979 in Leipzig and have an MA in Fashion Design from Burg Giebichenstein in Halle.

Ingvar: I was born in 1980 in Reykjavik, Iceland. I studied fashion design in Copenhagen. I've also worked as a tailor in Iceland and spent time at Central St Martins in London.

Susanne: We met whilst working at the same brand in London and decided that we could make a go of this for ourselves.

MORE is LOVE: How do you find working together?

Susanne: We work well as a pair. I work on creativity and design, using my background in fine art to influence the intricate detailing of the designs and color stories.

Ingvar: I like to keep one hand in the creative side, and the other in production and business. Working together is a delicate balance that comes with its ups and downs, but we always make it work!

MORE is LOVE: What do you think differentiates your brand from others?

Ostwald Helgason: We are well known for our use of bright, bold colors. Our signature is a clean silhouette accentuated with colorful graphic print. We obsess over details.

Ingvar: I am very interested in new technology, processes, shapes and textures.

MORE is LOVE: Who do you see wearing Ostwald Helgason? Who is your brand for?

Ostwald Helgason: Our collections are often based around the arts: theatre, dance and art itself. We like to think of the OH woman as someone who shares our interests. Someone who is confident, modern and intelligent. A girl who loves to have fun and travel, embracing color and design from all corners of the world.

MORE is LOVE: What is your biggest achievement?

Ostwald Helgason: The break through point for our brand was when Russian editors and street style stars like Mira Duma and Anya Zyourova wore matching Ostwald Helgason to the Chanel haute couture show in Paris. OH exploaded overnight – it was an amazing time for us.

MORE is LOVE: How would you describe your working process? How do you start working on the new collection?

Ostwald Helgason: Fabrics are very important to us, as are color and print. We often start with an idea for a specific fabric or material we’d like to use and build upon that. Each season we develop our own custom design hand woven fabric, so we begin to plan the collection around this. Things change and move in the design process so quickly that ideas are normally developing right until the last minute.

MORE is LOVE: Where do you see your brand in the future?

Ostwald Helagson: A lot of our past work from previous seasons is still relevant now, and we want this to continue in the future. We hope to create timeless pieces that do not age with time. At the moment we are focusing a lot on developing the brand from the inside to make it stronger than ever.

Susanne: I've been captivated by fine art. We combine our inspirations to create something natural yet somewhat hi-tech.

MORE is LOVE: What kind of music is usually playing in your studio?

Ostwald Helagason: Our studio is a jukebox of all decades and genres. Our creativity is fuelled by a lot of classical music, but we also enjoy hip hop, rap and some cheesy 80s music to keep the mood light hearted.

MORE is LOVE: Can you recall a memorable moment in your career?

Ostwald Helagason: Our first ever presentation in New York at MADE. Seeing the reaction of people to the collection for the first time was incredible!

MORE is LOVE: What advice would you give to a fashion student?

Ostwald Helagason: This is a tough industry. Work work work and make as many contacts as you can. If you do great work it will be noticed.

LOVE is... "hard work!"
